REBALANCING: A Message from Hurricane Ian
Some eyewitnesses of the devastating hurricane told a reporter that the sky seemed to be roaring at them as if someone really big and angry was shouting at them from above.
Hurricane Ian was sending us a message: Humans, it’s time to put your act together.
Hurricane Ian was sending us a message:
Humans, it’s time to put your act together.
The problem is not that we do not understand the message. Rather, we do not want to.
Already today, the estimated costs of this hurricane range from $50 billion to over $100 billion, making it the costliest hurricane to date. The authority from the sky tried to make it clear and obvious to us, the arrogant ground-floor tenants, that we must stop demonstrating “resilience” and start seriously thinking about Rebalancing.
Do you hear what I hear?
Ian’s message must be clear to all: This is my last warning. Stop NOW! Stop today, or else there will be no tomorrow.
Calling ourselves the pinnacle of creation, we love to show the hockey stick growth on all dimensions, forgetting that we are but a small drop of biomass trying to push the Universe off balance. The Universe will not tolerate that. If we do not change our course of action, the price we pay to correct the effects of the imbalance will undo all gains and halt further growth. Thus we will reach some balance but in a hard way.
We need to REBALANCE.
REBALANCING: It is not one word.
Rebalancing is not just a noun or a verb form. Rebalancing is a mentality that we all must develop if we want to extend the history of our civilization.
Rebalancing is not limited to business and economy only. To be sustainable as a civilization, we need to rebalance ourselves on all cultural dimensions: Physical, Social, and Intellectual. That means we will have to change our modus operandi in all areas, moving away from the need to consume in favor of creativity and giving. But REBALANCING is not a step back: – it will be a vital step forward.
Changing our relationship with the environment may be the first step – but not the only one. All spheres of our life are interdependent, as all of us are interdependent.

Rebalancing production, consumption, education, and polity will have to follow – and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Rebalancing is a new state of mind. Are you ready to change yours?
